Fat Free, How To Lose Weight and Never Diet Again – Author Responds
The Mens Health Update team is pleased to be able to present the ‘author responds’ by Carl van Zyl, the author of Fat Free, How To Lose Weight and never Diet Again. Carl will be making two posts for us, the first post covers questions asked while the ebook was in its ‘test phase’ prior to release, and the second post will cover questions asked by people who have bought this ebook since it’s launch.
Here are a few of the questions that have been asked by various people. during the ‘test’ phase prior to releasing the ebook to the general public. The ‘test’ phase is a very stressful time for any author because it is the time that your book is under intense scrutiny by individuals whose main aim is to give you constructive feedback in the form of criticism.
Q: I am now losing weight at an average rate of 6 pounds per week, thanks to your ebook, but I’m not really doing any exercise and it doesn’t feel like I’m on a diet. When do I start exercising?
A: Exercise is an important part of weight loss as it keeps you toned. You will find that your weight loss will start to slow down to the point where you may even reach a ‘plateau’. Normally when you see your weight loss beginning to slow down you can make another subtle adjustment to your lifestyle which will put your weight loss on track. If you decide to increase your activity level or your exercise level, do so gradually, as 6 pound weight loss a week is already quite high and rapid weight loss is not healthy. Read the chapters on ‘Plateau’, Exercise and Activity again for further insight.
Q: The Zero / Negative kilojoule section in the book is awe-inspiring but why does the ‘Fat burning foods’ chapter appear later in the book, surely they should all be in the same chapter?
A: I have spent hundreds of hours refining the book so as to be to the point, informative and precise, and the breakdown of chapters is purely a progression of that aim. Please note that each chapter concentrates on a particular subject and, in my mind, the most important aspect is that you found it in the book.
Q: I’ve been on diets all my life and I go to the gym twice a week and yet still I don’t lose weight, why not?
A: There can be many reasons for this and it is obviously time to take control of your weight. Firstly, do the assessment and then go through ‘the 12 easy rules to live by’ and see what you are not doing. Remember that your exercise / workout needs to be intense – rather an intense 20 minute workout than a 2 hour leisurely one. Your body gets used to the same old exercises, mix them up every two weeks – body weight exercises and plyometrics are great for toning and weight loss.
Q: I was horrified to read the chapter on Diet sodas as well as on Fat-free and Sugar-free products – the question is, if the manufacturers know that diet type products actually make you put on weight why don’t they advertise the fact.
A: This is a multi-billion dollar industry that would rather not see their sales plummet and, I imagine, become non-existent. It is through the education of the public (based on an enormous amount of sound scientific and medical research) that will hit them where it hurts most – on their bottom line.
Q: I have read some reports that say that the claims against Aspartame are false and that it was approved by the FDA. You come out very strongly against it in your book, why?
A: There is obviously controversy concerning Aspartame and Phenylalanine as you would expect when billions of dollars are at stake. My personal opinion is that after going through, what I believe to be, overwhelming evidence by doctors and scientists from around the world, I personally would not drink a diet soda or use any product that contains Aspartame. While Phenylalanine is found naturally in some products, I would not consume a product that contained it as an additive. All the claims made in the book are supported by documentation and while there may be conflicting reports, as an author I have to make a judgement call, which I base on the evidence I see and believe. For the record, it would not be the first time that the FDA got something wrong.
Q: I am a diet addict, in that I only drink and eat diet and reduced fat products and I cannot remember when last I ate fast food or went into a restaurant. My weight is slowly increasing even though I go to gym three mornings a week, I’m now at my wits end – can your book really help me?
A: Very simply, yes. Besides explaining the 7 weight loss processes you can use to lose weight there is a mountain of information which can really assist you. By the way, there is mounting evidence that diet sodas and other non-caloric, artificially sweetened drinks and foods actually lead, quite powerfully, to weight gain. By following the ‘12 easy rules to live by’ in the book you will find that you can start leading a normal life without hunger or guilt and that the days of your life revolving around your diet will be over.
Q: How long will I keep losing the 5 pounds a week I am currently losing?
A: It totally depends on how much weight that ‘subtle change’ you made contributed to your weight in the first place. For example if your diet included a lot of fried foods and you changed to grilled foods instead, the frequency and the amount of years you have been eating fried foods are contributing factors to your weight, and your overall weight loss may be considerable. On the other hand, if you seldom ate fried foods prior to changing to grilled foods your overall weight loss would be less. The only person that knows your real food intake is you, and you alone have to decide where and when to make the subtle changes in your life. It is really very easy and simple process and the information found in the book should be an enormous help in making your subtle changes even easier.
